Despite playing the good girl of the teen witches in “American Horror Story: Coven,” Taissa Farmiga’s character, Zoe, has been brazenly taking charge and (spoiler alert!) could possibly be in the running to become the next Supreme. On Wednesday’s episode, “Burn, Witch. Burn!” Zoe showed some major chainsaw skills despite being drenched in zombie blood, but the real question on viewers’ minds is whether Zoe is developing new powers and what that means for the future of her coven, and especially for Fiona (Jessica Lange), the current Supreme.
Yahoo TV chatted with Farmiga by phone about what’s next for her “Coven” character; which horror movies scare her most; getting chased by zombies; what it’s like making googly eyes with co-star Evan Peters (Kyle) while his real-life girlfriend, Emma Roberts (Madison), looks on; and what’s in store for the next episodes.
A standout scene from “Burn, Witch. Burn!” was where you fight zombies with a chainsaw, in a clear nod to “Evil Dead.” What was it like shooting that scene, and are there any other horror movie references coming up in future episodes?
Yeah, the “Evil Dead” reference was cool! I’m not really sure about future horror movie references, but I know Ryan [Murphy] loves to add those in. There will definitely be more.
We shot that scene from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and I had the blood on from the very start. It was a long night and I couldn’t touch anything. I didn’t want to mess it up. Even the small little flecks of blood are important. I wanted to touch my hair so badly! After the shoot I went home and took a long, hot shower.
Does filming some of the scarier scenes, such as the shed scene in this week’s episode, where you’re being chased by zombies, freak you out sometimes?
Oh gosh, yeah! In the episode, the zombies are chasing me and I’m all alone in that shed. It was really dark in the shed, and the cameras were very far away. So for those few minutes each take, I was pretty scared. The zombies just came at me, and everyone’s going all out. It’s pretty intense, but there’s definitely a balance. Our cast and crew is so fun, and everyone’s always joking around. So just in those intense moments things get scary.
Will other witches who aren’t necessarily the Supreme, like Madison and maybe now Zoe, get additional powers?
I mean, I think there can be witches with multiple powers? (Laughs) I definitely think that there will be more development of powers for all of the girls, but ultimately the only one with all seven powers will be the Supreme. I’m always asking the writers about this and trying to see what’s going to happen. I think Zoe will probably learn more powers, but I don’t know yet.
